Unitarian Universalism is well-known for affirming and promoting “the inherent worth and dignity of every person,” as well as “justice, equity and compassion in human relations.” These commitments tend to be enacted by UUs in doing substantive “good works” for people needing support.
In addition, many Unitarians seek personal growth within themselves. They do this by developing greater spiritual wisdom through “mysticism.”
These individuals now are well-organized. They maintain a website (UUMystics.org), circulate a newsletter, share and explore their experiences in a Facebook group (which has over 1,000 members), engage in a monthly teleconference discussion, and convene in person at the UU biannual conference (called the “General Assembly”) and in their local UU congregations.
In these and other ways, Unitarian mystics find kindred souls in the UU community, move more deeply into their hearts, and gradually engage more spirituality in their lives.
One participant on their website describes this group’s common ground as “the open minded investigation and practice of directly experiencing the transcending mystery and wonder–known by many names and affirmed in all cultures–which opens us to the forces that create and uphold life, and which exist and operate around, in, and through us.”
They often find mystical experiences are life changing. Such moments connect them more to everything in the universe, to see life as more meaningful and beautiful, to feel heightened awareness, bliss, and love, and to sense their consciousness being opened, expanded, or elevated to connect with a higher power or the divine within.
