Choosing Good Trouble

Our guest speaker, Dr. Joe Wegwert, will present a sermon entitled  ”Choosing Good Trouble,” that examines how Unitarian Universalists might draw on our Values and Principles to challenge the present currents of post-truth politics in American culture. How does the “search for truth and meaning” translate in a culture of toxic individualism and celebrated greed and political threats and violence?

How do we inoculate ourselves against the cynicism and despair sown by authoritarianism – specifically, Christian Nationalism – as we work toward the “beloved community” that describes our democratic aspirations? This sermon will address these questions through a discussion of the concept of Truth, a consideration of our radical (and heretical) UU heritage, and the challenges of our UU identities of (largely) whiteness, middle-classness, and niceness.

(Please note that the service originally planned for this week will take place next Sunday, Sept 22. Reverend Anthony will be away this weekend to attend the memorial for a dear family member, and Dr. Joe Wegwert, who was scheduled for next weekend, will be our guest speaker this Sunday.)
