Sarah Weaver is on the board of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lewis Center, Ohio (near Columbus), where she works as a cabinet finisher.<\/p>\n
She recently shared with a male co-worker that she was trans and was changing her name to Sarah.<\/p>\n
\u201cHuh? Why?\u201d He asked.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2019Why?\u2019 Good question.\u00a0 To be honest, that\u2019s a mind-bender for me still,\u201d Sarah replied.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve been out on Facebook for a year, and to my church and family for longer than that, and I still ask \u2018Why?\u2019\u00a0 I still look for an explanation.<\/p>\n
\u201cI still find myself looking for some evidentiary basis to point to, that will prove that I am who I say I am, a woman.\u00a0 The people who prefer to define me differently have evidence they can point to.\u00a0 But here I am, and all I can say is, \u2018I\u2019m just way happier now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
The co-worker said this made sense to him, and he asked her to explain, so Sarah went on.<\/p>\n
\u201cI tried not to be this.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to be this.\u00a0 I struggled to be what other people wanted me to be, but it didn\u2019t work. I didn\u2019t feel loved for being the real me, until recently, because I was never being the real me.\u00a0 I thought it was impossible to be loved for being who I am.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd that makes such a difference,\u201d Sarah explained, \u201csuch a big difference.\u00a0 I used to not want to be me, and now I do want to be me.\u201d<\/p>\n
