They consider social responsibility more important\u00a0than\u00a0personal\u00a0piety.\u00a0\u00a0They value\u00a0the guidance of reason and the results of science, and they try to avoid idolatries of the mind and spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Some are atheists, but others believe that the existence or nonexistence of a God matters less than what we each do every day to support\u00a0each other\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0well-being\u00a0of\u00a0our planet. They focus on how ethically they live; they wonder and rejoice in the natural world; and they believe in humans\u2019 capacity to dismantle injustice and care for one another.<\/p>\n<p>As UU Rev. Ginger Luke once said, \u201cWhen I look at a sleeping baby or the wrinkled, arthritic hands of my mother; when I listen to Kiri te Kanawa\u00a0sing; and when my eleven-year-old grandson gives me a hug and says, \u201cI love you, Grammie,\u201d I am stopped in my tracks at the wonder of life.\u00a0 I pause with great awe, and I am filled with\u00a0gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UU Rev.\u00a0Kaaren\u00a0Anderson also finds transcendence in human relationships.\u201d\u00a0 She acknowledges that \u201cSure, people have let me down many times.\u00a0 But they also have repeatedly saved me from a selfish me-ism that diminished my well-being. They\u2019ve loved me so fiercely that I was brought back from despair, loneliness, and isolation. They\u2019ve cajoled me into my better self and challenged me to aspire to possibilities that I feared were beyond me. They saw capacities in me that I couldn&#8217;t see in myself.
