{"id":8610,"date":"2024-05-31T12:00:08","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T19:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=8610"},"modified":"2025-06-12T20:21:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T03:21:15","slug":"what-uus-must-believe-104","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/what-uus-must-believe-104\/","title":{"rendered":"What UUs Must Believe [#104]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since members of the Sedona Unitarian\u00a0Universalist Fellowship don\u2019t have\u00a0a common creed, can they believe\u00a0whatever\u00a0they\u00a0want?\u00a0 Well, yes and no.<\/p>\n<p>UUs certainly are free to form their own\u00a0beliefs\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0nature\u00a0of\u00a0reality\u00a0and their\u00a0meaning\u00a0or\u00a0purpose\u00a0in\u00a0it.\u00a0 And they do.<\/p>\n<p>Ask any individual UU, and you\u2019ll find that most have clear beliefs\u00a0about\u00a0many of life\u2019s\u00a0ultimate\u00a0questions.\u00a0 And,\u00a0for other questions,\u00a0they\u00a0are still\u00a0discovering which\u00a0beliefs\u00a0resonate\u00a0with\u00a0them\u00a0and\u00a0which\u00a0do\u00a0not.<\/p>\n<p>Would they, therefore, say they believe anything they want?\u00a0 Not usually.<\/p>\n<p>Most would say they believe what they do because they must. Their beliefs are the ones that simply make\u00a0the most\u00a0sense\u00a0to\u00a0them.\u00a0They believe\u00a0what\u00a0they feel\u00a0compelled\u00a0to\u00a0believe.\u00a0 Every\u00a0fiber\u00a0of\u00a0their\u00a0being\u00a0tells\u00a0them that\u00a0those beliefs\u00a0are\u00a0true.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0they simply believed\u00a0in\u00a0whatever\u00a0they wanted, they might convince themselves that their faith guarantees them eternal bliss in Paradise. That\u2019s an appealing belief, but most UUs don\u2019t buy it.<\/p>\n<p>Their minds are still open to discovery as they move through life, learn about other people\u2019s beliefs, form relationships, and have experiences that shape their personal credos. They accept the ideas that evoke in their spirit a sense of the transcendent, and sift out what does not ring true.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, UUs believe that how they treat one another is more important than the beliefs they hold, and more important than\u00a0the\u00a0words\u00a0they\u00a0choose\u00a0to\u00a0express\u00a0their\u00a0beliefs.\u00a0 In\u00a0community,\u00a0they\u00a0invite each\u00a0other\u00a0to uncover and share what their minds, hearts, and experiences call them to believe.<\/p>\n<p>They agree to walk with one another on this journey, in love. Sometimes that walk is exciting and filled with joyous discovery and revelation; sometimes it\u2019s not.
