{"id":8119,"date":"2024-03-22T12:00:43","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T19:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=8119"},"modified":"2025-06-07T11:46:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T18:46:11","slug":"on-mystical-experiences-96","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/on-mystical-experiences-96\/","title":{"rendered":"On Mystical Experiences [#96]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People in all faith traditions have had mystical experiences, including members of the Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, they consider the potential for having such experiences inherent in human nature.<\/p>\n<p>Mystical experiences have four general characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ineffability (they defy expression in words)<\/li>\n<li>noetic quality (they provide deep insight)<\/li>\n<li>transiency (they don\u2019t last long, though their effects can be profound)<\/li>\n<li>receptivity (they happen to us, more than our making them happen)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A UU member described such a mystic experience this way:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne Sunday, the minister asked us to join hands and to slowly chant \u201cOm.\u201d The resonance of the chant and the joy of belonging to a spiritual community made me feel, just for a few seconds, as if my body had disappeared and I was lifted from the earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that momentary state of utter emptiness, I had a clear realization that the whole universe is a seamless tapestry of people, animals, vegetables, rocks, and more\u2014all sustained and nurtured by the Great Mystery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt a flood of love pour through me that was so powerful it almost knocked me over. I tipped my head back to more fully drink in the feeling. It felt obvious that this love was pouring through me (through all of us!) all the time and I had simply awakened to the experience for these few moments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn overwhelming peacefulness embraced my whole being. In that moment, I felt an intense experience of merging profoundly with what I have come to name the Spirit of Life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the midst of this knowing, a voice within me said clearly, \u2018For a moment like this, it was worth having been born.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew I was one with the universe and with all that is and that I must use my gifts to contribute to the welfare of all.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People in all faith traditions have had mystical experiences, including members of the Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
