{"id":7644,"date":"2023-12-01T12:00:19","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T19:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=7644"},"modified":"2025-06-07T10:54:47","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T17:54:47","slug":"uu-respects-personal-choice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/uu-respects-personal-choice\/","title":{"rendered":"Respecting Personal Choice [#80]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Instead of insisting that all congregants adhere to a scripture, creed, or creation story, Unitarians are united by a set of seven universal principles.<\/p>\n<p>One principle is \u201cthe inherent worth and dignity of every person\u201d and another affirms everyone\u2019s \u201cfree and responsible search for truth and meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship congregants appreciate this freedom to think for themselves.\u00a0 But they know it can sometimes be taken a bit too far, as demonstrated in these quips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why did the UU cross the road?\u00a0 \u201cTo support the chicken in its search for its own path.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>How many UUs does it take to screw in a light bulb?\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cNone, UUs support the lightbulb&#8217;s right to change by itself.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Why can&#8217;t UUs sing very well in choirs? Because they&#8217;re always reading ahead to see if they agree with what it says in the next verse.<\/li>\n<li>What do you get when you cross a Unitarian with a Jehovah&#8217;s Witness? \u201cSomeone who goes door-to-door looking for an open-minded discussion.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>What do you get when you cross a Klansman with a Unitarian?\u00a0 \u201cSomeone who goes out at night to burn a huge wooden question mark on his lawn.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>After a UU service, a visitor from a more traditional church was asked by a congregant, &#8220;So how did you like it?&#8221;\u00a0 Well, the people here are great, but I didn&#8217;t believe half of the things that minister said!&#8221;\u00a0 The congregant replied, &#8220;Why, that\u2019s great, you&#8217;ll fit right in!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, these jokes exaggerate what UUs think and say, but they do indicate that UU marches to a different drumbeat than most faith traditions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Instead of insisting that all congregants adhere to a scripture, creed, or creation story, Unitarians are united by a set of seven universal principles.
