{"id":7639,"date":"2023-11-17T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=7639"},"modified":"2025-06-07T10:48:35","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T17:48:35","slug":"uu-view-of-evil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/uu-view-of-evil\/","title":{"rendered":"A View of Evil [#78]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We learn in the news about profound harms being done to people around our country and the world.\u00a0 Many label these actions \u201cevil.\u201d \u00a0Unitarian Universalists typically don\u2019t focus their attention on evil.\u00a0 They emphasize reassuring people that human beings are fundamentally good, that kindness ultimately prevails.<\/p>\n<p>However, they know that evil impulses can spring up in every human heart and enterprise. UU\u2019s goal is not to eliminate evil \u2014 that is too much to hope for \u2014 but to understand and minimize it.<\/p>\n<p>They recognize that evil is a human creation. Natural disasters cause great damage to innocent people, but are not considered evil.\u00a0 Blaming supernatural forces for evil ignores our human capacity to choose actions (or inaction) that are consistent with, or at odds with, our better selves.<\/p>\n<p>We all can recognize and reduce evil \u2014 using our own consciences, the \u201cstill, small voice&#8221; within, the collective wisdom of our various traditions.\u00a0 When we know what\u2019s right and good, yet choose a harmful path, we actively bring evil into the world&#8211;in personal betrayals, in structural injustices, and in wars fought with guns and bombs.<\/p>\n<p>All evil has a common cause \u2014 our capacity to be so self-absorbed and self-righteous that we lose sight of our connections and similarity to others, as well as our common bond through the Source we all have in common.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever we forget who we are and our essential relationship to one another \u2014 we have a breeding ground for evil.
