Unitarianism was founded in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century by people who questioned the notion of the Trinity, viewing it as neither Biblical nor theologically sound. They contended that God was One\u2014Unitarian as opposed to Trinitarian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0in 0in 6.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Universalists questioned the Calvinist doctrine that claims only a elect few are \u201csaved.\u201d Universalists believe that all people carry within them a divine spark, and they affirm the essential goodness of human beings. They maintain that every person on earth can live a spiritually fulfilling life, and<span style=\"letter-spacing: 2.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>that a religious<span style=\"letter-spacing: 2.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>community\u2019s role is to inspire us to seek guidance from that internal core of goodness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0in 0in 6.0pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Unitarian Universalists see the Holy, by whatever name one chooses to call it, as a loving and abiding presence. They have outgrown their European roots to include the wisdom that uplifts love and possibility in all of the world\u2019s major faith traditions and in many secular sources of inspiration, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Direct<span style=\"letter-spacing: 1.5pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>experience<span style=\"letter-spacing: 1.55pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>of<span style=\"letter-spacing: 1.5pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>that<span style=\"letter-spacing: 1.5pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>transcending<span style=\"letter-spacing: 1.55pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>mystery and wonder and, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to open our spirits to the forces that create and uphold life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Words and deeds of prophetic women and men who urge us to confront oppression with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Jewish<span style=\"letter-spacing: 3.45pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>and Christian teachings that call us to love our neighbors as ourselves<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Humanist<span style=\"letter-spacing: 1.9pt;\">\u00a0<\/span>teachings that counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarian Universalism is a marriage of two religious traditions, both emerging during the Protestant Reformation.
