{"id":6836,"date":"2023-06-16T12:00:20","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T19:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6836"},"modified":"2025-04-30T18:59:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T01:59:58","slug":"a-renewing-theology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/a-renewing-theology\/","title":{"rendered":"A Renewing Theology [#58]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Along with humans\u2019 innate drive for sexual connection, social power, and possessions, theologians maintain that we also crave \u201cknowledge of the right direction\u2014for orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like other faiths, Unitarians have offered theological guidance for centuries.\u00a0 Unlike most others, however, they are committed to refreshing their theology periodically.<\/p>\n<p>Paradoxically, maintaining an open-minded outlook is a long-standing Unitarian tradition.\u00a0 A 1936 Unitarian statement reads, \u201dThe genius of the Unitarian movement has been its power to adapt the vocabulary and practices of a religion whose roots are sunk deep into the past to new knowledge, new conditions, and new situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forty years later, in a 1976 speech, Eugene Pickett, the Unitarian president at the time, urged members of this movement to \u201cprovide an atmosphere in which those among us of all theological persuasions\u2014the Christians, the humanists, the existentialists\u2014may fully explore and boldly express their worldviews without defensiveness, belligerence, or dogmatism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Ours will never be one world, but many.\u00a0 Let them be spoken with confidence and vigor.\u00a0 By rights, ours ought to be the richest theological milieu of any denomination in modern experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contemporary Unitarians continue to subscribe to Luke\u2019s ancient reminder: \u201cWisdom has many children\u201d (7:35)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Along with humans\u2019 innate drive for sexual connection, social power, and possessions, theologians maintain that we also crave \u201cknowledge of the right direction\u2014for orientation.\u201d Like other faiths, Unitarians have offered theological guidance for centuries.\u00a0 Unlike most others, however, they are committed to refreshing their theology periodically.
