{"id":6834,"date":"2023-06-09T12:00:10","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T19:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6834"},"modified":"2025-04-30T18:58:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T01:58:36","slug":"theology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/theology\/","title":{"rendered":"Theology [#57]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most Unitarians are uncomfortable with theology.\u00a0 They tend to prefer philosophy, because (as the saying goes) although philosophers might look in a dark room for black cat that isn\u2019t there, many theologians will find it.<\/p>\n<p>Unitarians are oriented toward logical reasoning, such as questioning faith in God\u2019s omnipotence by asking: \u201cCan God create a stone heavier than God can lift?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, they also recognize that our rational mind can explain only a narrow part of human experience.\u00a0 We don\u2019t understand the world through our left-brain alone, especially when it comes to ultimate questions, such as, \u201cWhy is there Something instead of Nothing?\u201d \u00a0\u201cWhy do bad things happen to good people?\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cIs there meaning to life beyond the mundane activities of everyday life?\u201c<\/p>\n<p>These are theological questions, which begin, as Robert Frost said poems do, with a lump in the throat, not an AI query.<\/p>\n<p>When Unitarians receive a cancer diagnosis, they hasten to learn all they can about the science of the matter, and then they go for a long, thoughtful walk deep into the red rocks, knowing that to confront the challenge successfully, the state of their spirit will be as important as the extent of their knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The spiritual realm includes many theological themes, such as faith, God, oneness, the soul\u2014all among humans\u2019 earnest attempts to understand the lived experiences of hope, death, morality, and transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Unitarians are wary of those who substitute mythology for theology. They won\u2019t trade in hooey in order to touch the holy.\u00a0 But their souls, like everyone else\u2019s, yearn to understand how to live life deeply and wisely.\u00a0 They don\u2019t wall themselves off from awe, mystery, grief, and possibility simply because phenomena like these can\u2019t be explained rationally.\u00a0 Therefore, they know that theology offers more valuable guidance for living than meets the skeptic\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most Unitarians are uncomfortable with theology.\u00a0 They tend to prefer philosophy, because (as the saying goes) although philosophers might look in a dark room for black cat that isn\u2019t there, many theologians will find it.
