{"id":6828,"date":"2023-05-19T12:00:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T19:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6828"},"modified":"2025-04-30T18:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T01:54:09","slug":"spirituality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/spirituality\/","title":{"rendered":"Spirituality [#54]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarians value spirituality, but not in the ways most people define that term.\u00a0 They don\u2019t limit it to scripture reading, attending church services, and prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Their view of spirituality is more akin to how Catholic monk\u00a0Wayne Teasdale, who supported mutual understanding among world religions and was an active campaigner for\u00a0social justice,\u00a0saw it.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cSpirituality is a way of life that affects and includes every moment of existence. It is at once a contemplative attitude, a disposition to a life of depth, and the search for ultimate meaning, direction, and belonging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others use visual images to describe spirituality.\u00a0 They may view it as a\u00a0tree with one trunk and many different spiritual branches, or a single mountain with many paths going up, or a river of wisdom tapped by many wells.<\/p>\n<p>Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk, commented, \u201cSometimes people get the mistaken notion that spirituality is a separate department of life, the penthouse of our existence.\u00a0 But rightly understood, it is a vital awareness that pervades all realms of our being. Someone may say, \u2018I come alive when I listen to music\u2019 or \u201cI come to life when I garden\u2019\u2026Wherever we come alive, that is the area in which we are spiritual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Author Sarah Bowen uses this simple equation: Spirituality = a deeper perspective + a higher purpose.\u00a0 She says, \u201cCultivating a deeper perspective enables me to see beyond my own needs to the interconnectedness we all share, and living with higher purpose helps me make daily choices that support that connection.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarians value spirituality, but not in the ways most people define that term.\u00a0 They don\u2019t limit it to scripture reading, attending church services, and prayer.
