{"id":6817,"date":"2023-04-21T12:00:59","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T19:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6817"},"modified":"2025-04-29T16:27:57","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T23:27:57","slug":"blessings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/blessings\/","title":{"rendered":"Blessings [#50]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarian Universalists are not conventionally religious.\u00a0 They don\u2019t believe any single scripture comes from God.\u00a0 They find the Divine everywhere in everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>One UU leader, Don Southworth, sees God in the people he meets.\u00a0 He thinks of them as \u201cGod with skin on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also ends all of his emails with the salutation, \u201cBlessings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some people think that word is an expression of his religion (not true); others think it\u2019s a little weird (probably true), and others think he\u2019s wishing them well (absolutely true).<\/p>\n<p>He views his blessing as an affirmation of the\u00a0other person\u2019s \u201cbelovedness,\u201d as his thankfulness for that person\u2019s presence, as saying out loud the joy and love he feels for the other.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like saying the Sanskrit word, \u201cNamaste,\u201d when greeting or departing from someone, with \u201ca bow to the divine in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A blessing also might be felt (or said) to the rising sun, when starting a new day, when beginning a meal, or any time we want to express our gratitude for the gift of life and for the others we share it with.<\/p>\n<p>He agrees with the mystic, Meister Eckhart, who wrote, \u201cIf the only prayer we say is thank you, it would suffice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reminds us that we are blessed, we are blessings and we bless others.\u00a0 To him, a blessing is a moment of \u201cgrateful acknowledgement that in the midst of a broken world unspeakable beauty, grace and mystery abide.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarian Universalists are not conventionally religious.\u00a0 They don\u2019t believe any single scripture comes from God.\u00a0 They find the Divine everywhere in everyday life.
