{"id":6686,"date":"2023-04-14T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T19:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6686"},"modified":"2025-04-29T16:25:54","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T23:25:54","slug":"on-grief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/on-grief\/","title":{"rendered":"On Grief [#49]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarian Universalists don\u2019t have a uniform view of what happens to us after we die.\u00a0 But they can\u2019t help wanting to know, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>So a congregant, who had just lost a beloved partner to HIV, couldn\u2019t resist asking his clergy, \u201cWhere is Stephen now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sighed, and then slowly replied, \u201cMay I ask you a question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, surely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was Stephen yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, at the hospital, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do with him there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI held his hand and told him that I loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeautiful!\u00a0 Did you stay with him all last night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I went home to sleep for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you love Stephen any less because you were miles apart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh no, if anything, I felt it more strongly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you were with Stephen over the years, did you ever leave your own body, cross the room, and enter Stephen\u2019s body and soul to experience what it was like to be him from the inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, of course not.\u00a0 That\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, so all the time you were together, you knew him, and felt him, and loved him from within your own skin, and within your own heart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did, very much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, that answers your question.
