{"id":6665,"date":"2023-02-10T12:00:38","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T19:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6665"},"modified":"2025-04-29T16:02:22","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T23:02:22","slug":"unitarians-and-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/unitarians-and-democracy\/","title":{"rendered":"UU and Democracy [#40]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A unique element of Unitarian Universalism (UU) is viewing democracy not only as a political value, but as a religious value, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Their fifth of their seven core principles is \u201cThe right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, although UUs value making individual ethical decisions, they recognize that none of them operates alone\u2014politically or religiously.<\/p>\n<p>They want to participate in making the policies that affect their lives, both in their Fellowship and in their secular community.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, each congregation is essentially autonomous.\u00a0 Within a congregation, decisions are made via a democratic process\u2014and, whenever possible, by consensus.<\/p>\n<p>The Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship operates as a spiritual, covenantal community.\u00a0 Therefore, rather than gathering to believe alike, their unity lies more in a shared promise, as one UU teacher put it, \u201cto love alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Granted, this approach doesn\u2019t always run smoothly.\u00a0 Some quip that a few congregants \u201ccan\u2019t see the forest for the me\u2019s,\u201d or that others \u201care a legend in their own mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But SUUFers regularly reweave their fabric through \u201cwhat they do together, not what they believe together,\u201d and their integration process is always democratic, not autocratic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A unique element of Unitarian Universalism (UU) is viewing democracy not only as a political value, but as a religious value, as well.
