{"id":6663,"date":"2023-02-03T12:00:01","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T19:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6663"},"modified":"2025-04-29T15:58:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T22:58:51","slug":"freedom-and-discipline-in-unitarianism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/freedom-and-discipline-in-unitarianism\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom and Discipline [#39]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A basic Unitarian principle (the fourth of seven) is to engage in \u201ca free and responsible search for truth and meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship\u2019s members cherish their freedom of thought, unconstrained by church or state.\u00a0 But freedom\u2019s not the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>They know responsibility completes freedom.\u00a0 Theirs is a freedom\u00a0<em>for\u2014<\/em>first of all, for an\u00a0<em>informed\u00a0<\/em>self-choosing.<\/p>\n<p>Freedom requires knowing one\u2019s options, the alternative paths available to us.\u00a0 We feel a responsibility to learn and consider them intelligently, and to explore them with our fellow wisdom seekers.\u00a0 Unitarian freedom is not to be ignorant, to believe whatever we wish to be so (sometimes dubbed \u201canythingarianism\u201d), or to settle for spiritual anarchy.<\/p>\n<p>While we celebrate our freedom to follow where our mind and heart and conscience lead us, we accompany our freedom with a commitment to using the disciplines of the spirit: rational thinking, genuine feeling, honest sharing , and the courage to change our minds.\u00a0 (That&#8217;s instead of relying on rigid consistency, which 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0C. UU minister Ralph Waldo Emerson, once called \u201cthe hobgoblin of little minds.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Included in our &#8220;freedom disciplines&#8221; is openness to many sources of truth about existence and its meaning to us&#8211;extending ourselves beyond straightforward logic, which one Unitarian sage warned can simply be an organized way of going wrong with confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Unitarians rely also on intuition, science, and the humanities, on the inherent wisdom of our feelings, on the insights of humanity&#8217;s great prophets and teachers, and on our own personal experiences of being and becoming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A basic Unitarian principle (the fourth of seven) is to engage in \u201ca free and responsible search for truth and meaning.\u201d The Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship\u2019s members cherish their freedom of thought, unconstrained by church or state.\u00a0 But freedom\u2019s not the whole story.
