Tapobana valued the disciple\u2019s caring service, but thought him rather stupid.<\/p>\n<p>One day, a visitor told Tapobana that he\u2019d just seen the disciple walk on water \u2014 strolling calmly across the nearby river as easily as one crosses a street.<\/p>\n<p>Tapobana\u00a0was stunned and\u00a0called in\u00a0the\u00a0disciple to ask, \u201cIs it really true that you\u00a0crossed the\u00a0river by walking on the water?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I did, master, what could be more natural?\u201d replied the disciple, \u201cBut it was only thanks to you, blessed one.\u00a0 At every step I repeated your saintly name &#8212; doing that upheld me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tapobana thanked him and thought to himself, \u201cIf my disciple can walk on water, surely I can, too.\u00a0 The miracle took place in my name, so I must possess power I did not suspect, and holiness of which I was not fully aware.\u00a0 Too bad I never even tried crossing the river as if I were crossing a street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that, Tapobana stood up and walked straight down to\u00a0the river bank.\u00a0 Without hesitation, he set his foot on\u00a0the water, took another step, and with unshakable faith loudly repeated, \u201dMe, me, me, me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, he sank like a stone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarians believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person.\u00a0 Recently, a Sedona Unitarian Universalist Fellowship member shared this related story, originally told by\u00a0Rama-Krishna, a 19th\u00a0century Hindu mystic: Tapobana was a spiritual master, who employed a devoted, hard-working disciple to assist him.
