{"id":6423,"date":"2022-10-28T12:00:19","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T19:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6423"},"modified":"2025-04-28T18:26:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T01:26:42","slug":"unitarian-congregational-autonomy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/unitarian-congregational-autonomy\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Congregational Autonomy [#25]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unitarians don\u2019t base their theology on any single book.\u00a0 A Unitarian worship leader\u2019s message sources are unlimited.\u00a0 On any given Sunday, UU minister Anthony Mtuaswa Johnson, might base his sermon on a song lyric, an inspiring story, an episode in history, or on poems presented by congregation members.<\/p>\n<p>UU Music Director, Susannah Martin, might include in the service a song from another culture, a traditional American folk song, a pop standard, a protest anthem, a hip-hop lyric, a Native American chant, or a hymn.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the texts and topics that UU clergy explore in sermons are limited only by their conscience. That&#8217;s because UU\u2019s tradition is to foster congregational autonomy.\u00a0\u00a0UU values congregants\u2019 and clergy\u2019s freedoms <em>to:<\/em> choose, question, think critically, and take risks. Accordingly, UU ministers are granted freedom of the pulpit \u2014 so they can best serve the spiritual, ethical, and moral needs of their community.<\/p>\n<p>The flip side of this extraordinary freedom is responsibility. UU spiritual leaders have an ethical responsibility to weigh their words carefully and to discern when to &#8220;comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The UU congregation also has the freedom to disagree.\u00a0\u00a0One UU minister affirms that &#8220;We encourage everyone &#8216;in the pews&#8217; on Sunday morning to filter the sermon through their own beliefs, experiences, and understandings, and then to form their own opinion. That opinion may ultimately be in line with the sermon, vary in a few ways, or differ completely.
