{"id":6420,"date":"2022-10-21T12:00:04","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T19:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/?p=6420"},"modified":"2025-04-28T18:25:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T01:25:06","slug":"unitarians-have-deep-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/news\/blog\/unitarians-have-deep-roots\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Deep Roots [#24]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The origins of the Unitarian Universalist faith go back two millennia, to those who first focused on Jesus\u2019 teachings, rather than his divinity.\u00a0 They thrived in various forms over the centuries throughout Europe.<\/p>\n<p>In England, some prominent Unitarians were the scientist Isaac Newton, the philosopher John Locke, and the poet John Milton.<\/p>\n<p>In America, Unitarianism developed among New England Congregationalists, known as \u201cFree Thinkers.\u201d \u00a0They founded Harvard University\u2019s Divinity School.<\/p>\n<p>Among their early leaders were Ralph Waldo Emerson and Rev. William Ellery Channing, who said that Jesus didn\u2019t intend a church to \u201cbear the name of a human leader, distinguished by a form or opinion\u201d\u2026that the essence of the church is \u201cpeople made more holy, virtuous by their religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some Unitarians US presidents were John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Millard Fillmore, and William Howard Taft.<\/p>\n<p>Universalists emphasized humanity\u2019s heavenly nature and God\u2019s love for the human race.\u00a0 They were active for years in reform for prison inmates and working women, opposing slavery, advocating separation of church and state, and supporting civil rights for all.<\/p>\n<p>The two movements, Unitarianism and Universalism, had much in common, so they merged in 1961.\u00a0 Both reject some Christian orthodoxy, such as the trinity, original sin, the wrath of God, and hell.\u00a0 Both believe in the essential goodness of human nature and the importance of critical thinking in religion.\u00a0 Some believe Jesus embodied God\u2019s hope for humanity; some opt for religious pluralism or non-theism.<\/p>\n<p>UUs have founded several non-sectarian universities, including Tufts, St. Lawrence, and the California Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>As a united group, UUs support flexibility, freedom of conscience, and local autonomy.\u00a0 No minister, member, or congregation is required to subscribe to \u201cany particular interpretation of religion or to any particular religious belief or creed.\u201d\u00a0 They stand strongly for human dignity, social justice, compassion, the free and responsible search for truth, democracy, the global community, and respect for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>published on Oct 21, 2022<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[177],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6420","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6420","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6420"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6420\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":8787,"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6420\/revisions\/8787"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6420"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6420"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sedonauu.org\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6420"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
