Unitarian Universalists\u00a0are called to\u00a0<\/span>respond to\u00a0<\/span>the world by feeling its\u00a0<\/span>sorrows, as well as its joys.\u00a0 At times, they are heartbroken about\u00a0some conditions in our country and the\u00a0<\/span>world, but they never despair.<\/span><\/p>\n

They feel grateful for their\u00a0extraordinary\u00a0<\/span>legacy of independence. They know that they are blessed with the gift of freedom\u00a0<\/span>to believe or\u00a0<\/span>to doubt, and with the gift of reason to consider what\u00a0they\u00a0<\/span>know of life and to compare it to the timeless wisdom from\u00a0<\/span>other\u00a0<\/span>cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n

They value receiving\u00a0from their forebears many\u00a0<\/span>powerful\u00a0<\/span>examples\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>courage in the service of humanity and of love that encompasses\u00a0<\/span>all life.<\/span><\/p>\n

These are their treasures–but\u00a0<\/span>they know that none of them are simply theirs to hold.\u00a0 A UU\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>role is to enrich their blessings by giving them away,\u00a0<\/span>again\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>again.<\/span><\/p>\n

They do this best when they keep in mind what their Fellowship is, and is not.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a place to\u00a0<\/span>hide, nor to\u00a0shelter\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>world.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a\u00a0<\/span>place\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>pretend\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>their own or others\u2019 lives\u00a0<\/span>are not complex, confusing, and even depressing at times.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their fellowship is, instead, a place where they stand\u00a0beside\u00a0<\/span>one another, look the world in the eye, attempt\u00a0<\/span>to see it clearly, and\u00a0share\u00a0<\/span>their determination to face and deal with what they see pro-actively, with\u00a0<\/span>courage\u00a0<\/span>and,\u00a0<\/span>yes,\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>joy!<\/span><\/p>\n
